The “Ai Stratis- Green Island” project is a pioneering project, in which mature Renewable Energy Sources (RES) technologies were applied, so that through a hybrid station the island’s energy, electrical and thermal needs could be covered at a high percentage, from environmentally friendly energy sources. For this purpose, a Hybrid Power Generation Station from RES (wind turbine and photovoltaics) was constructed together with electrical and thermal energy storage systems.
Part of the electricity produced by RES will meet over 85% of the island’s electricity demand, while the rest will be stored as thermal energy in the form of hot water to cover the residents’ heating needs through district heating.
The project also includes energy saving actions in municipal buildings on the island and the promotion of electric mobility.

The innovation of the project, as well as its strong research character, arises primarily from the high penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (>85%) into the island’s autonomous electrical system, combined with an integrated district heating system for heating the island’s residences and producing domestic hot water.
The project has an important research and innovative character, given that RES production systems that contribute such a high percentage to cover the energy needs of autonomous systems, have not been implemented in Greece until today.
