The electrical interconnection of the RES station (wind turbine, photovoltaic array) with the central Switching Substation (SS) is implemented through an underground Medium Voltage (MV) interconnection line, which ensures reliable and safe transfer of the generated electrical energy to the island’s grid.

In addition, an optical fiber cable was installed along the same underground route to provide stable, high-speed and highly reliable communication between the RES station and the Switching Substation.
Through the optical fiber network, the following functions are enabled:

  • integration with the central SCADA system,
  • continuous telemetry of operational and electrical parameters,
  • remote control of the electrical equipment of the hybrid system,
  • exchange of protection and automation signals, which are critical for the stability and monitoring of the island’s electrical system.

The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), the Switching Substation (SS), the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO) substation, and the thermal production and storage facility, were installed outside the boundaries of the settlement of Agios Efstratios, at a distance of approximately 200 m, and in close proximity to the existing Public Power Corporation (PPC) station.

Within this site, covering a total area of approximately 4,000 m², a 463 m² building was constructed to accommodate the operational and auxiliary functions of the project. In addition, the surrounding area was fully configured and prepared to host the electrical and thermal equipment and to ensure safe and reliable operation of the infrastructure.
